Pythagoras Textbook Questions and Answers

5, 8, 11, and 14!
QUESTION #5:
a) What is the area of each square attached to the legs of the right triangle?

b) What is the area of the square attached to the hypotenuse?
c) What is the length of the hypotenuse?

ANSWER:
a.) 6 x 6 = 36
8 x 8 = 64

b.)a² + b² = c²
6² + 8² = c²
( 6 x 6 ) + ( 8 x 8 ) = c x c
36 cm² + 64 cm² = c²
100 cm² = c²
The area of the square is 100 cm.

c.) c² = √100 cm²
c = 10 cm

The length of the hypotenuse is 10 cm.
QUESTION #8:
The side view of a
ramp at a grocery
store is in the shape of
a right triangle. Determine the length
of the ramp, to the nearest centimetre.

ANSWER:
a² + b² = c²
50² + 200² = c²
( 50 x 50 ) + ( 200 + 200 ) = c x c
2500 cm² + 40 000 cm² = 42500 cm²
√42500 cm² = 206 cmQUESTION # 11:
The right triangle below has a square
attached to its hypotenuse. What is the
perimeter
of the triangle? Give your
answer to the nearest tenth of a centimetre.

ANSWER:
√914 = 30.2

a² + b² = c²
17² + b² = 30.2²
b² = 30.2 ² - 17²
b² = ( 30.2 x 30.2 ) - ( 17 x 17 )
b² = 912.04 cm² - 289 cm²
b² = 623.04
b² = √623.04
b = 24.9
The perimeter is 72.1 m.

QUESTION #14:
What are the lengths of b and c? Write your answer to the nearest tenth of a metre where
appropriate.

ANSWER:
FIRST TRIANGLE:

a² + b² = c²
3² + b² = 5²
b² = 5² - 3²
b² = ( 5 x 5 ) - ( 3 x 3 )
b² = 25 m² - 9 m²
b² = 16 m²
b² = 16m²
b = 4 m

SECOND TRIANGLE:

a² + b² = c²
6² + 4² = c²
( 6 x 6 ) + ( 4 x 4 ) = c x c
36 m² + 16 m² = 52 m²
c² = 52 m²
c = 7.2
