Percent means out of 100. It is also another name for hundredths and can also be expressed as fractions and or decimals.
4.1 Representing Percents Key Ideas :
Shade squares on a grid of 100 squares called a hundred grid to represent a percent. A completely shaded grid represents 100%. If you shade more than one grid, that represents a percent greater than 100%. To represent a fractional percent between 0% and 1%, you have to shade part of one square. Also, to represent a fractional percent greater than 1% you have to shade squares from the hundred grid to show the whole number, then shade part of a square from the grid to show the fraction.

Percents can also be written as decimalsor a fractions.
Ex. 1/2 = 0.50 = 50%
4.3 Percent of a Number Key Ideas :
You can use mental math strategies such as doubling, halving, and dividing by 10 to find the percents of some numbers. Write the percent as a decimal and then multiply by the number to calculate the percent of a number.
eg. 12 ½ % of 50 = 0.125x50 = 6.25
4.4 Combining Percents Key Ideas :
Adding percents can be used to solve problems.
Eg. Add combined percent with original number:
25% of 100 = 25. 25 + 100 = 125
Eg. Multiply the number by a single percent greater than 100:
125% of 100
1.25 x 100 = 125
Percents of percents can be used to determine amounts that result from
consecutive percent increases or decreases.

I got 23.33 by dividing $280 by $12 .
I also rounded 23.33 to 23% .
2. Your restaurant can seat 150 guests. If 6 tables of 6 are seated, what percent of the restaurant seating is full?

I got 36 by multiplying 6 tables by 6 that are seated.
I got 4.16 by dividing 150 guests by 36.

Percent: 425% ( 4.25 x 100 = 425% )
Fraction: 4 1/4 ( Lowest term from 425/100 - 4 and 25/100 - 4 and 1/4 )
b) Decimal: 0.845
Percent: 84.5% ( 0.845 x 100 = 84.5% )
Fraction: 845/1000 ( 0.845 x 1000 = 845 )

Percent: 0.62% ( 0.0062 x 100 = 0.62 )

Page 128: Representing Percents
For this scribe, I was assigned to do questions 3, 7, 11 and 13.
3. Shindi commented to a friend that “some percents would be easier to show if we shaded the parts that were not included in the percent.” Explain what she means. Which percents are easier to show using Shindi’s method? Why?
Shindi meant that for some percentages, it would be better to colour in the parts in a 10x10 grid that are not included in the percent because it will be easier to identify the percent.
7. Represent the percent in each statement on a grid.
a) Attendance at the fall fair increased by 3.2% this year.
b) The average mass of a Singapura cat is about 0.13% of the mass of a Siberian tiger.

c) The length of the Yukon River is about 230% of the length of the Fraser River.

11. The land area of Alberta is about 113% of the land area of Saskatchewan. Use hundred grids to show how the land area of Alberta compares with the land area of Saskatchewan.
Saskatchewan = 100%
Alberta = 113%

a) Use a calculator to convert 1/3 to a decimal. How could 1/3% be shown using a hundred grid?
1/3 converted into a decimal is 0.3 repeated.
b) Why are percents involving repeating decimals sometimes difficult to show on a hundred grid?
Percents involving repeating decimals can be difficult because you need to know how to convert a repeated decimal onto a grid. Also, repeating decimals never end.
