Winnipeg Harvest

In Winnipeg Harvest, I learned that there are alot of people who are in need of help for food and that Winnipeg Harvest supplies food for those who are in need.Winnipeg Harvest helps people who does not have enough money to buy food.The Winnipeg Harvest gets their food supplies from people who donate food, supermarkets, companies, and stores.

Top Ten wanted Items from Winnipeg Harvest

The top 10 items needed in Winnipeg Harvest are:
~Canned Fish & Poultry
~Canned Fruit & Vegetables
~Canned Stew, Chili, Brown Beans
~Baby Food
~Whole Grain/Whole Wheat Pasta
~Peanut butter (Light)
~Rice
~Canned Spaghetti Sauce & Tomatoes
~Cereal
~Canned Soup

When I volunteered, all that I can remember was to pack 1 kind pasta, 1 canned meat, 1 canned fruit or vegetable, and 1 canned soup, which then was put into a plastic bag and tied. If the canned soup was too small we then add another canned soup just because we wanted the same amount of soup for everyone. Also, if one of those cans were really damaged, we go ask our supervisor if it was ok or not, if it wasn't it would be thrown out. After putting the food in the plastic bags, we then put it in a larger plastic bag as in an empty rice bag and taped the top. We packed in 7 plastic bags of food into the large bag and carried/pulled it onto the sides. Finally we pulled the large bags onto a wooden platform and stacked it "waist high", which then was pulled away by a forklift. We kept on doing the same thing over and over until time was over. We got around 3.5 packs of stacked food. I would say Winnipeg Harvest volunteering was enjoyable and fun but it took alot of hard work to get around 3.5 packs by the end of the day. I hope your turn for Winnipeg Harvest will be much fun than what I did.

Winnipeg Harvest

During The Tour

When we got to the building we sat and a person from the Winnipeg Harvest told us about a bunch of stuff. He showed a map of where the different food banks were around Manitoba. The the top things that they needed were:

1. Canned Fish & Poultry
2.Canned Fruits & Vegetables
3.Canned Stew, Chili, Brown Beans
4.Baby Food
5.Whole Grain/Wheat Pasta
6.Peanut Butter
7.Rice
8.Canned Spaghetti Sauce
9.Cereal
10.Canned Soup

Who Do They Help?

The Winnipeg Harvest send food to the "Hungry" or poor people and people in poverty.
They get the food from kind people and also themselves. Stores that have food products that they do not need send a lot to Winnipeg Harvest.

During The Volunteer

When we were volunteering we had many boxes of canned food in a table and in another there are many big bags. Some people would stay in a table to put 3 different kinds of canned foods in a plastic bag and close them. On the other table when they send plastic bag full of canned, we would take 7 of the plastic bags and put them in 1 big bag and tape them shut. It was a lot of work but it was to help since we were doing it for the people.

Winnipeg Harvest

When I went to Winnipeg Harvest I learned that they get the food donations from grocery stores and people, they also receive money donations as well. Winnipeg Harvest helps out families and individuals that are living in poverty or that are homeless by providing food for them so they don't starve. I also learned that a lot of people below the age 18 are getting help for Winnipeg Harvest.

The top ten items needed in Winnipeg Harvest are,
  1. Canned fish and poultry

  2. Canned fruit and vegetables

  3. Canned stew, chili, brown beans

  4. Peanut butter

  5. Baby food

  6. Whole grain pasta/ whole wheat pastas

  7. Rice

  8. Canned spaghetti sauce or tomatoes

  9. Cereal

  10. Canned soup

When I went to volunteered at Winnipeg Harvest we made family packages. Daniel's Final Percent Post

Percent means out of 100. It is also another name for hundredths and can also be expressed as fractions and or decimals.

4.1 Representing Percents Key Ideas :

Shade squares on a grid of 100 squares called a hundred grid to represent a percent. A completely shaded grid represents 100%. If you shade more than one grid, that represents a percent greater than 100%. To represent a fractional percent between 0% and 1%, you have to shade part of one square. Also, to represent a fractional percent greater than 1% you have to shade squares from the hundred grid to show the whole number, then shade part of a square from the grid to show the fraction.

4.2 Fractions, Decimals and Percents Key Ideas :
Percents can also be written as decimalsor a fractions.

Ex. 1/2 = 0.50 = 50%

4.3 Percent of a Number Key Ideas :
You can use mental math strategies such as doubling, halving, and dividing by 10 to find the percents of some numbers. Write the percent as a decimal and then multiply by the number to calculate the percent of a number.

eg. 12 ½ % of 50 = 0.125x50 = 6.25

4.4 Combining Percents Key Ideas :
Adding percents can be used to solve problems.

Eg. Add combined percent with original number:
25% of 100 = 25. 25 + 100 = 125

Eg. Multiply the number by a single percent greater than 100:
125% of 100
1.25 x 100 = 125

Percents of percents can be used to determine amounts that result from
consecutive percent increases or decreases.
RATIO:

Two Term Ratio-it compares 2 quantities measured in the same unit

EXAMPLE: boys: girls
:1:2

Three Term Ratio- compares 3 quantities measured in the same unit.

EXAMPLE: boys: girls: men
2:1:2

Part to Whole Ratio- compares different parts of a group to each other. It can

be written as fraction, decimal, and percent.

EXAMPLE: boys: everyone ( boys, girls, men )1:5

Part to Part Ratio- compares different parts of the group to the whole group.

EXAMPLE: boys : girls
1 : 2

RATE:

Unit Rate- a rate in which the second term is one.

EXAMPLE: $1/ per 3 cookies

Unit Price- a unit used when shopping.

EXAMPLE: $ per/ gram, $ per/ kilogram, $ per/ hour, kg per/ hour, etc.

PROPORTIONAL REASONING:

PROPORTION:a relationship that say 2 ratios or 2 rates are equal. Can be written as fraction.

EXAMPLE : ( $ 5 / 10 cookies) = ( $ 15 / 30 cookies)

Total Surface Area

The length of a rectangular prism are 4 cm and 8 cm and 1 cm. What is the Total Surface Area?

1st way:

L x W = A

Top: 8x1 = 8cm2

Top: 8x1 = 8cm2

Front: 8x4 = 32cm2

Front: 8x4 = 32cm2

Side: 1x4 = 4cm2

Side: 1x4 = 4cm2

T.S.A = 8 + 8 + 32 + 4 + 4 = 88cm2

The total surfce area is 88cm2

The leanths of a rectangular prism are 2 cm and 6 cm and 2 cm. What is the Total Surface Area? Use lateral area

LxW = A

2x2 = 4cm2

2x2 = 4cm2

^sides.

T.S.A = 48cm2+ 4cm2 + 4cm2 = 56cm2

Comment, if I did anything wrong or something. Thanks, byee

Winnipeg Harvest

What I learned from Winnipeg Harvest is that they help poor families who are in need of food across Winnipeg and that those food that they donate really helps heaps and heaps of people. Winnipeg Harvest usually gets its food supplies from people who are willing to donate, different Supermarkets and different stores too.

Some of the items that are needed in Winnipeg Harvest are:
  • Canned Fish or Poultry
  • Canned Fruits and Vegetables
  • Canned Stew, Chili or Brown Beans
  • Baby Food
  • Whole Grain or Whole Wheat Pasta
  • Peanut Butter ( Light)
  • Rice
  • Canned Spaghetti Sauce or Tomatoes
  • Cereal
  • Canned Soup

I can honestly say that I've been to Winnipeg Harvest before, because during the summer I've been volunteering with Jocelle and Kathryn, so it was no biggie, but this time it was a different job so I experienced something new. I remembered us making those Family Packages/ Emergency kits where we need to put in a box of pasta, canned vegetable, canned fruit and a soup in a small plastic bag. We also have to pack them up in larger bags and like make a stack of them in a small stage, so it was practically a tiring work but a fun one also (;
