Tonie's Algebra Post

Algebra

Algebra- Writing mathematical phrases using letters to represent numbers
eg. n+3 = 143x = 18

Variable- a letter that represents a number in an equation or expression
eg. n+11=20 (can be n, x, p, z, or any letter)

Constant- the integer in an algebraic expression or equation
eg. 18+n =35

Expression- Pattern (many answers)
eg. 5n

Equation- Only has one answer and an equal (=) sign
eg. 5n=20

Cancel the constant using zero pair
Balance (do the same thing to the other side)

Chapter 2: Multiplying Integers

(+2) x (+3) = +6
(2) x (3) = 6
(2) (3) = 6
If brackets are touching, they multiply
or
If a number is touching a bracket,it also multiply

of means multiplying


(2) x (-3) = -6
or

Remove 2 groups of (+3) (use zero pairs)

Chapter4: Order of Operation with Integers
To solve (+5) x (-3) + (-6) / (+3), I would first follow the BEDMAS. I'd put square brackets around (-6) / (+3). After, I would solve (+5) x (-3) and then I would add the two answers together and which would equal to -17.
(+5) x (-3) +[(-6) / (+3)] = ( -17)
(+5) x (-3) + (-2)
(-15) + (-2)
(-17)

Tonie's Final Percent Post

Percent - means out of 100. Example 50/100

4.1 Key Ideas: To represent a percent you can use 100 grids. One shaded grid that has all the squares shaded in represents 100%. To show a percent that is larger than 100% you shade in more than on grid. To represent a percent between 0% and 1% you shade in a part of one square

4.2 Key Ideas: Fractions, decimals, and percents can be used yo represent numbers is various situations. Percents can be written as fractions and decimals.

4.3 Key Ideas: You can use some mental math strategies such as doubling, halving, or dividing by 10 to find percents of some numbers.

4.4 Key Ideas: Percents can be combined by adding to solve problems. You can ass the combined percent ammount to the original number. Percents can be used to determine ammounts that result from consecutive percent increases or decreases. You can multiply the original number by a single percent freater than 100.

Tonie's Pay It Forward.

Part 1:
In my opinion, paying it forward means helping people or doing something helpful without asking for return. Then the people that you helped, helps more people and so on.

Part 2:
My Pay it Forward act of kindness was asking for donations door to door with Casey and Diana to donate for Christmas Cheerboard. We chose this activity because we want everyone in Manitoba to have a merry christmas and also, it is not fair that only some family are getting a christmas dinner. We helped the Christmas Cheerboard by donating the money that we raised. Casey, Diana, and I went door to door to ask for donations for Christmas Cheerboard. We raised about $80.00 . We did our act of kindness on december 16th, 17th, and 19th 2010.




Part 3:
Our act of kindness went GREAT. We raised about $80.00 for 3 days. I think it's good. I felt very proud of my group for walking around the neighborhood on a -25 day to ask people for donations. The people we asked for felt surprised that Diana, Casey, and I walked around on a very cold day. The staff at the Christmas Cheerboard felt thankful for our donation and hard work. Indeed we did. We asked a couple of people to pay it forward and most of them sounded very interested but some of them didn't. People acted interested when we told them what pay it forward meant.

Part 4:
The idea of Pay it Forward is important because, if people didn't pay it forward there would probably be alot of homeless people on the street that has nowhere to stay in to be safe and warm and has no food and water to survive. I believe that our act of kindness made a difference because we raised $80.oo which probably helped a couple families through out Winnipeg.

Tonie's Math Profile

Hey, my name is Tonie Reyes and I am a grade 8 math student. If someone asked me if I liked math, I would honestly say no. Math is my weakest subject and sometimes, I have a hard time understanding it. The best thing I have done in math class was fractions. I liked it because it was very easy, but as I got older it got harder and harder. I remember one time when I was in grade 4, I was in a group and we were given 3 different coloured paper. We had to cut the paper into 10 pieces and used it to make fractions.

Last year in grade 7, the best unit I studied was integers. At first it was a bit confusing but in the end it got easy. I did well on zero pairs , number lines, adding and subtracting integers. The unit I struggled in the most was Rotation, Translation, and Reflection. I didn't know how to show it on the coordinate grid but I knew the definitions. I will ask more questions, do my homework/work on time, and study harder so this year, I won't struggle so much.

This year for grade 8, I will pay attention more, check the blog more often for homeworks or tests, I will try to participate more in class by raising my hand if I know the answer, and also ask my peers or teachers for help to be a successful math student. I would like to learn algebra to get ready for grade 9.

Last year, the post i liked the most was about Integers. I liked it because i used different colours. But I would've made it better by putting more pictures, videos, and links. Blogging helped me a better student because it helped me refresh my memory, and when I miss a day of school or left my math stuff in school, I can just go on the computer and check the blog. This year, I am looking forward to making math videos, and other math websites.
