Cameron's Algebra



Algebra - Writing mathematical phrases using letters to represent numbers:
eg. m+9=16,
m=7


One Step Equation:
Variable - A letter that represents a number in an algebraic expression or equation.
eg. a+12=14
Constant - The integer in an algebraic equation or expression.
eg. 19+m=9
Expression - Pattern - many answers.
eg. 6x
Equation - Only has one answer and has an equal sign (=).
eg. 3x=12

Solving an Algebraic Equation:
1) Isolate the variable
2) Cancel the constant using zero pair
3) Balance, doing it to both sides
4) Verify to check

Term 2 Reflection

Term 2 Reflection
In this term I did very well in finding out the volume of shapes such as triangles and cylinders, it was very easy for me because all you had to do was remember the formulas of each shape such as (πXrXr)Xh.

At one point when we were learning about the volumes and when it was put in to problems, it sort of confused me because I didn’t know excactly how to find the answers.
I think I could do better next term by always reading the questions twice, or until I understand what the question is asking me. Another thing I want to improve on is too check over my answer again because I could of missed a single thing in the formula or something messed up which could change my answer on my tests.

This term I learned a lot about percents, surface area, and volume such as all the formulas that was involved. And how to use them all in a correct way so you won’t mess it up. I also learned some ways of finding out how much cm or m an object is if needed by using those formulas.



I will add an audioboo later, I do not have an itouch or a microphone at home.

Question 15:
a) If the edge length of a cube is doubled, find the ratio of the old surface area to the new surface area.
b) What happens if the edge length of a cube is tripled? Is there a pattern?

Answers:
a) 1:4. Instead of thinking of it as a cube, I thought of it as a square. Let's say a side of a cube's side lengths were 6m and had an area of 36cm2. You multiply the side lengths by 2, which becomes 12, and find the new area which is 144. 144/36=4. So, the ratio is 1:4.










b) If the side length is tripled, the new ratio becomes 1:9. There is a pattern if you continue doing this. All of the lengths are prime numbers while the other numbers stay the same. For example, 1:4, 1:9, 1:16, 1:25. ( x 4=64)


Question 16:

Shelby wants to paint the walls and ceiling of a rectangular room. 1 liter of paint covers 9.5 m2.


a) What is the least amount of paint Shelby can buy to paint the room (subtract 5 m2
for the door and windows)?
b) How much will the paint cost, including the amount of tax charged in your region?

The height is 2.6m2, the length is 4.8m2, the width is 6.8m2. 1 liter of paint covers 9.5 m2.

Answers:
a) L x W
2.6 x 4.8
2.6 x 4.8
2.6 x 6.8
2.6 x 6.8
6.8 x 4.8
6.8 x 4.8=
125.6 125.6-5= 120.6
120.6-65.28 (the ceiling paint has to be separated from the wall paint)= 55.32
55.32/9.5=5.8

Wall paint: 1 can 4L, 2 cans 1L.
Ceiling paint: 1 can 4L.

b) The cost will be 82.75 with 12% GST and PST.
Wall paint: 4L= $24.95
1L=$7.99
Ceiling paint: 4L=$32.95

24.95+7.99+7.99+32.95=73.88
12%= 8.87.
73.88+8.87= 87.75

r=20÷2 V=(3.14x10x10)x40
r=10cm V=12,560cm³

Popcorn Lover's:

r=d÷2 V=pi.r.r.h
r=30÷2 V=(3.14x15x15)x20
r=15cm V=14,130cm³

Martha should buy the popcorn lover's one because it has more volume than the jumbo one.Popcorn Lover's volume is 14,130cm³ while Jumbo's 12,560cm³

Cameron's Pay it Forward




Part 1
The idea of Pay it Forward was inspired by a 11 year old boy named Trevor who was given an assignment from his SS teacher Mr. Simonet to think of a way to change the world. He thought of the idea of helping 3 people and those 3 people help 3 people, kind of like a chain reaction. It never stops as long as you pay the act of kindness forward. The more people you pay it forward to, the more people they pay it forward to and so on.

Part 2
For my act of kindness, me and my group (Cameron, Kaecee, Ryan, and Daniel) decided to donate used and new toys. We decided to donate toys because we have toys that we don't use anymore, and its almost Christmas so why not give it to the less fortunate. We donated the toys to "Helping Hands Resources for Immigrants" which gives the toys to immigrate families in Winnipeg. We donated the toys on December the 17Th at 12 O'clock PM. I also decided to donate more toys by myself. I did it for the same reasons as before and also because some people can't get the toys themselves. The toys were donated to "The Salvation Army" which gives the toys to less fortunate people in Winnipeg. I donated the toys on December the 18Th at 5 O'clock.

Part 3
Our act of kindness went great because we gathered all of our toys that we didn't need and donated all of them. When we donated the toys, I felt happy because I knew it would go to children that might not be able to afford toys. I think the children would have a good memory of someone helping them out. The Clerk was joyful and surprised that five teen boys were donating toys to their foundation for a good cause. We asked the clerk if she knew what Pay It Forward was, and she did. We also asked her if she would Pay It Forward and she said that she would, and that Helping Hands already does. She thought that it was a good idea that we wanted this to keep on going.






The other act of kindness that I did went well because the toys were donated. When I donated the toys to The Salvation Army I felt great because the toys would go to children that can not afford them. The man employed at The Salvation Army was surprised that a teenager was donating. I asked the man if he would pay it forward and he said he always does and he thought it was a good idea that we were trying to keep it going.

Part 4
The idea of Pay it Forward is important because it helps a lot of people, with the start of one person. Also, it isn't a hard concept to do because you're only helping 3 people, and the ones you helped do the same to 3 others. It makes people realize that one little thing can grow into one of the largest ideas in the world.
I do hope that my act of kindness made a difference because that would really make me feel amazing knowing I've helped someone.


I would like to thank my mom for driving me and the group to the places we needed to go.

Pythagoras

Right Triangle

A right triangle needs to have a right 90 degree angle and have three sides.
The sides that make up the right angle are called legs.

Side C is the Hypothenuse.
It is located opposite of the right triangle.
C is always the largest side.


This is a video that talks about the sides of a triangle, it is pretty much the same as what I have been saying, this is just to see what I was talking about.

Here was the homework from today.

You have to explain this equation: a2+b2=c2. You can try to figure it out on your own, or you can do some research on it, the equation is made from an ancient Greek person called Pythagoras.

Ratio:
Two-term ratio - compares two quantities measured in the same units.
Three-term ratio - compares three quantities measured in the same units.

Examples: dogs:cats, 3:4, 1 slice to whole cake, 1:5.

Rate:
Rate - compares two quantities measured in different units.
Unit rate - a rate in which the second term is one.
Unit price - unit rate used when shopping.
Examples: $1.99/10g, 12/hr, 30km/hr.

Proportional Reasoning:
Proportion - a relationship that says that two ratios or two rates are equal.
Examples: 2/3 = 4/6, 1/2 = 4/8.

Cameron's Math Profile

Hello there, my name is Cameron. I am a grade 8 math student. If someone asked me if I liked math I would say yes it is a subject I like to take. I am not the best at math but I like solving the questions for fun. I remember a time in grade 5 when the the whole classs got up and went into a big circle and played this multiplication game were one kid would go around the circle and compete with the other students, then when he got it wrong the person who beat him would go around the circle. I found that game to be really fun and it helped me with my multiplication. That is math I reall like.

In grade 7 I really liked the unit on areas of circles and squares. I remember all about the formulas to find them. I also remember struggling with rotation on a grid. The shape would have too many sides so it would make it harder. Last year I did not study that much. I think if I study more this year I will do better.

This year is grade 8. I know that studying and using the blog and my friends will help me do better with my work. I really want to do a lot more of Algebra and what ever it takes for me too be better in the years to come.

I was proud of this post because I put a vdeo and a link, it could of been better if I put a picture. Also many people commented on it. It makes me feel good when somebody comments. I am really looking foward to doing math movies on the computer this year.
