Trish 's Square Root Scribe Post

Pages 99-1, # 17

QUESTION : Carmen wants to mount an 18 x18 cm square picture on a square board that is four times of the area of the picture.


a) What is the area of the picture?

I answered 324 cm because when you square 18 it totals to 324.





b) What is the area of the board?

For now, I know that the board is 4 times the area of the picture, and so I multiplied 324 to 4 and so the answer is 1296.




c) What are the dimensions of the board?

I answered 36 because if you will find the square root of 1296 the answer will be for sure 36.

The question is:

Order the following numbers from least to greatest:
7, v46, 5.8, v27, 6.3

To answer this type of question you would have to find the square root of 47, and also 27.

The square root of 46 is 6.7.

The square root of 27 is 5.17.

The order from least to greatest will be as shown:

v27, 5.8, 6.3, v46, 7.

Page 84: Show You Know

Determine the side length of a square with an area of 196 cm².

I used prime factorization to answer this:




The side length of a square with an area of 196 cm squared is 14 cm².






Page 85: Questions 3, 7, 12 and 14.

3. The square root of 36 is 6 because out of all the factors, 6 multiplied by itself is the only one that equalled to 36.

7. a) 2x3x7 = 42 ; It is not a perfect square.
b) 13x13 = 169 ; It is a perfect square.
c) 2x2x2x2x2x2x2x2 = 256 ; It is a perfect square.

12. Determine the square of each number:
a) 3x3 = 9
b) 18x18 = 324

14. Determine the side length of a square with an area of 900cm²
900 ÷ 30 = 30 ; 30x30 = 900cm²
The side length of a square with an area of 900cm² is 30 cm.
